It'd be great if old worn out clothing was changed into refuse somehow.  Then it could be automatically cleaned up and not clutter the fortress so badly.  Then it could biodegrade out in some garbage heap and disappear Smiley

The ability to reweave it into some less-then-ideal cloth would be a much better option environmentally-speaking.
Sure, it's made of old clothes other people wore, but it's cheap and readily available!
Perfectly Dwarven!

Why not both?

Make it degrade into "Cloth Scraps" which count as refuse and can be made into "Cloth Rags" at a loom which can be made into low value clothing.

Note that refuse piles have options to accept every object category in the game. Thus, all that we would need is an option for everything damaged enough to be considered refuse and go to a refuse stockpile with the proper object enabled.

What would be cool is a personality trait for damage. One dwarf will use something 'till it disintegrates into dust in their hands, while another will seek a new personal item if it has a scratch on it. It would also need to account for what they consider valuable. The second dwarf likely would not care for a few scratches on their pick, and the first would throw away a perfectly good bed if it is currently burning.

Of course, items they do not own themselves they really would not care much for unless they have a good sense of responsibility, where they will get a bad thought for damaging something they own/do not own. Then bad thoughts to the owner, and possibly damaging their relationship. Imagine a miner breaking an artifact pick of a very conservative(Item wise) dwarf. Murder ensues!

Wars started over this would be interesting. But I digress. This is about refuse. But then again, this new personality trait would be helpful to work with refuse. Perhaps all of this could use a work-over when Toady works on refuse.

I have wondered why one can't take the Narrow clothing, made of silk, and piece it into Dwarven clothing, or at least make silk bags and ropes from the pieces.

These types of changes are meant to be normal when you are concern with the current situation. You are aware with professional job application writers that I have been looking from a while.
