so, i have a very happy fort going. lots of production and no worries (except for the barren waters of the northern wastes! damn them!!)
some animals died (with good cause) and i decided to finally use my butchery. meat will once again fill my dwarven halls!
but my butcher won't butcher. or should i say the pleb with no skills that i picked to be my butcher won't butcher.
i choose butcher a dead animal and he gets the cancel notify: needs butcherable unrotten nearby item. there's a dead hunting dog in a refuse stockpile right next to the butchers. i can't wait for the economy to kick in so that these freeloading socialist will be forced to do something more than laze around drinking wine.
his workshop is easily accessible (mined all around it, just to be certain), his labour is set to butchery. is it a problem that he has no skill in the area? the workshop profile only let's you select as low as 'dabbling' for a min skill level. i've got allow all selected, so i don't see what the prob is. any ideas?
i doubt it needs saying, but this game rocks so hard it hurts

You can't butcher someones pet, even if they die before you want to butcher them.

the animal corpses currently awaiting the butcher's blade were all stray's, and a few hunting dogs. but none of them were assigned to anyone. any other ideas?

The corpse must be in a Refuse Stockpile for the butcher to get it. If the animals were killed in Battle, someone needs to haul they corpses to a refuse stockpile first. The corpses can not be "Forbidden". Depending on your settings, killed creatures might be auto-forbidden, so you need to select and un-forbid them. (Set Orders and Options -> Forbid) Also dwarves need to be allowed to Gather Corpses and Gather Refuse Otside (if it's outside).
They will collect the corpses and haul them to a refuse stockpile, if they are allowed to. Once a eligible corpse is in the stockpile, a "Butcher Dead Animal" job will be auto-queued at the butchers shop, and a Dwarf with Butchery labour enabled (if you have one) will see to it.
You also can't butcher corpes of domestic animals that died of Old Age, it appears

just butchered a live mule (useless sods) with no trouble.
but still won't butcher corpses
the dog was a hunting dog killed in battle, and has since been moved to my refuse tower (connected, but outside). no troubles there.
it's not forbidden, the dog wasn't a pet. dwarves gather corpses/refuse, it all seems okay- he just won't butcher.
i didn't know it was an automated job- i've tried leaving the corpse for the guy to come get, putting it in a mini refuse stockpile right next to the butchers as well as selecting the 'butcher dead animal' command from the butchers, but no love. NO LOVE!!!!

Its only an auto job if you have it set to be one, but that is on by default. Its in your Orders menu.
