I was looking at the Freeze the ocean topic, which reminded me of my old over-ocean fortress. Build entirely of stone, it was to have only one entrance, allowing for perfect defense. It would have an economy driven by fish, carving there bones into crafts in order to buy other supplies. I then got the idea to lead a path from the fortress to a level above the ground, then build a walled off downward stairway into the ground, where the goblins couldn't get me. There, I  would dig the farms and bedrooms, but no more. It was never barely even started, but now, I'm continuing it, and asking you for suggestions.

A switch to dump it into the sea. That is all.

Yeah, this.

And don't forget to make a video when you "test" it. Bonus points for 200+ Dwarfes and a king inside. Grin

And i guess it would be kinda cool to have giant waterfalls surround the fortress, as in.... pumps on every side, constantly pumping up water and dropping it into the sea from above.

I think an entire sea fortress of glacial ice would be fun.  Especially if you get a week of thaw in the summer.

Well if you're into over the top stuff you could dig into the sea. Sounds crazy impossible, but with some crazy dwarven engineering it can be done, apparently. A movie of it might be done is here-> http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-305-floatingpumpplatform

wouldn't dropping it in the sea destroy it? it doesn't do any good to the gobbo's towers I collapsed. water may not be very different, especially with stone.

Oh dropping it into the ocean would almost certainly destroy it. I think that was the point of the lever. Basically a self destruct switch.

Jackrabbit, you don't seem to see the beauty in this. All great dwarven architecture must be equipped with a self-destruct switch. That's what makes it dwarven.

oh, of course. Its sort of subliminal message really because I always go out of my way, sometimes without realizing it, to make sure I have the means of destroying my fortress should the need arise. or even if it doesn't arise. or I make it arise.

Goddammit. Now the word arise sounds foreign.

Hmm... a self-destruct lever for the entire fortress, eh?

How about doing the opposite? Build a big ol' tower, and then extend it laterally around the entire map. Connect the lateral part to the rest of the tower using only one piece of floor or something. When you want to collaps the entire map except your fort, just destroy that one piece of floor and BOOM, the mother of all caveins just pwnt whoever's sieging you.

It would look like this...

Okay, I'm a little confused.... how do you build a fortress on top of the water?

Out of stone, of course.

Constructed floor tiles  support other floor tiles. So, if one is built off the side of a cliff you can stand on it and build another connected to it. You can continue building outwards and expanding, eventually building walls and multiple levels, completely disregarding physics as long as one tile is anchored to land.

you cannot build a wall without another wall or ground below.
check: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Wall
thus - unfortunately - true (not entered through cellar) castles are impossible also. or, at least, i've never managed to build one.

And it won't collapse...?

How would you go about making a drawbridge then?
