1) If water falls down from a higher level onto a floor grate, does it make mist?
2) If I dig a deep, deep hole, only one tile wide, and use it as a garbage dump, will any dwarves fall down the deep garbage pit?
3) If I build a floor grate across the deep garbage pit to keep my dwarves from falling too far, then will the grate catch the garbage, or will the garbage fall through the grate?

1) Yes. The water acts as if it is falling through nothing, and any water falling more than 1 z-level makes mist. 2) Only if they're fighting something around it. 3) Yes, it will catch the garbage. An alternative would be putting the grate at the top of the shaft and connecting it to a lever. Then you can open it when you're throwing stuff away and close it when you're not.
