I come across quite a few enemy dwarves getting caught in my cage traps during ambushes and sieges.  I can't pit them like I can the goblins, and my only solution to getting them out of the cages so far is to plant the cages and built a lever mechanism to open them.  Anyone have an easier solution?

No, but you should make an arena and release them against your champion dwarves.

Hehe Smiley  I prefer my fortified arena for "advanced target practice".  I also throw some weapon traps to keep things interesting.  (or in case my marksdwarves are feeling lazy)  It bums me out that I can't throw in those pesky evil dwarves too.

Just a random idea:

1) Build a short bridge over the pit with just 1 end attached to land; 2) build a cage at the end of the bridge; 3) tell your dwarves to remove the attaching floor tile; 4) the remaining bridge falls down and I guess since the cage is broken it's habitants are free.

I take no responsibility for harming the victims via this method.

I'll try that out with my next evil dwarf visitor Smiley  I didn't know cages would break if dropped from a height.   Of course, I'd be out a cage with that method, but it might be worth it.

I think they will be deconstructed not destroyed (turned from building to haulable object) so you'll be able  to recover it once you're done with the guest.

I think with that method you will just have a bunch of knocked-out dwarves and a dwarf cage in the middle of the dust cloud, with the dwarf still inside. When buildings crumble they turn into their base components, which includes a cage with a dwarf in it. Your best bet would be to just set up all the cages in your arena and attach levers to them all.

Yeah, I didn't think of it. You have a point.
