Couldn't (or shouldn't) Toady make a HTTP Redirect to here, or to the DF Wiki? I have all the links neatly on the Bookmarks Toolbar but people who just Googled DF and get a 404 will be disappointed mightily.

I found this because of a link on the wiki.

Yeah, Wiki for me too. That should get many of the regular forum users here, but until the real forum is up, it'll be anarchy to a degree.

I guess this is a bad time for me to be just getting into the game, then. I knew about it from earlier this year, but only just really got into it this week. I was hoping to comb the forums for tips (like how to clear stones from a room so that I can put a stockpile in there), but I guess I'll just have to stick to the wiki. Anyway... hi, guys.

The wiki's great for that sort of thing and all, but that post pretty much outlines the entire reason this forum is here. Make sure you have a garbage dump area designated [(i) (Enter) (Drag) (Enter) (g)] Then you can (D)esignate (b)no idea where the b came from (d)ump those pesky stones with (Enter) (Drag) (Enter)

Dump them, huh? Ok. I read that was "cheating". I guess if there's no other efficient way, then that's what I'll have to do. Anyway, thanks for the tip. I'm not gonna clog up this thread with new questions, because I'm sure the old forums are full of answers. Will they survive the host change?

Can't really say for sure, but I'm willing to bet Toady backed them up before he jumped off the server cliff...

Dumping is not cheating.
Just press [d], [ b ] and [d] and select an area you want cleared of all not built items.
Then press [ i ] and create a small garbage area near your workshops (you need to select the garbage option).
Then when some stones have been dumped there, press [d], [ b ] and [c] and select the pile of dumped stones.
It's part of the game, I don't see how it's cheating.
EDIT Fixed.
EDIT I just repeated everything that other guy said <_< Should've read the thread better.
Also, you should ask away! You could even create new threads.

Ah, I was starting to go into withdrawl there, for a second. Whew.
By the way, "Dwarves with a Passion" is one of the most disreputable page names ever. Sure looks great on my Firefox tabs.
About Dumping: While there's no ethical problem with garbage dumping or stockpiling stones, there is a slight exploit involving "dumping" stones all into one pile. This is quantum stockpiling, where you use a 1 tile dumping zone over a pit. The dwarves walk up to the edge and drop stone after stone into a pit, filling it up with rocks. In this way, you can store an entire mountain's worth of stone in one square. This is where some players have a problem.
I however, prefer to simply [d][H]ide my excess stone.

I think the wiki link should do an okay job of directing people here. That's how I found this place.
On the plus side, assuming Toady is able to keep working as normal, once he gets a new server we should get a totally awesome dev_now update.

Hiding stone works fine for hallways and bedrooms, but stockpiles have to be clean to be usable. Dumping works, but I also try to keep my masonry workshops close to stone piles I want to get rid of. Having the dwarves use the stone for something useful is great, especially if you happen to need a few doors.

Uh you know, you can do that without the pit too. Any garbage dump designated area becomes a Quantum pile.

I can confirm this. Just a tile on the ground.
