Cause I sure can't.

 Undecided

I can't get my miners to dig downward.  I've tried to follow the wiki instructions carefully, but for some reason they don't work.  Just be clear, here's what I've done:

1) Designated a single square as a "downward stairway" (d + j).

2) Moved one step down along the z axis.

3) Designated the square directly under as an "upward stairway" (d + u).

4) Waited.

Here's what happened:  My miner immediately dug the downward stairway.  Then he just hangs out.

I tried digging an up/down stairway as well, with the same result.

What am I missing?

Sorry for asking, but it's the only thing i can think of right now...
Are you really sure you designated the upstairs in the right square ? - sometimes the designate cursor will jump when you change the designation orders...

Edit: As emergency solution you could try it with ramps. You can (need) only to designate Upward Ramp, so designate from the level below. You will not see the designation on the upper level, but a Dwarf will still go there and make the ramp.
Edit2: Another thought... Is the designation on the lvel below still active ? The job might have been canceled if you hit something like Dump wall (underground water ?) I am not sure if i ever seen this happen on stairs, but i suppose it could...

Actually, I noticed that after moving downward a z level, designating the upward stairway, and then returning to the surface, my cursor was placed two squares to the left of the downward stairway.  This sounds like the probable cause of the problem, but how do I figure out the correct spot for the upward stairway?  And why doesn't a simple up/down stairway work?

On an unrelated note, if I hit z and check my stores, I note that all the items I possess now in mid-spring have a question mark beside them.  Why?

Honestly don't know why I was having this problem before, but I've resolved it now.  Thanks for the advice and help, anyway.

The question mark mean that the quantity of the items given there is not exact.
You need a bookkeeper to update the records from time to time tog et exact numbers.
From the (n)obles Screen select your Bookkeeper, choose (s)ettings and set him to highest precision.
He will need a office.

Another stupid question: how do I quit without abandoning my fortress?

How do I load a saved game?

thats an easy one, just hit ESC, the go to "save game" and hit enter.

you are then transported back to the main menu where you can quit.

to load your save, just hit the "continue playing" option on the main menu.

I have no "Quit" option in my main menu.

I'm playing a tile variant called "May Green"?  There were a lot of specialized settings in the .ini file I had to change back.  There's no quit option, and when I want to exit, I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Never mind.  I figured it out.

Sorry about being so bothersome with these idiotic questions.

For getting the designation to the right spot, dont leave the designation menu after setting up the down stairway. As soon as you've made the downstair way designation, go down a level and press 'u' then designate the up stairway. The x will remain in the same spot so you dont have to move and guess.

As for the up/down stair option thats only if you want to go down (or up) mulitple levels. For example say you wanted to go down two levles instead of just one, first you'd designate a down stair, the go down a level and designate the up/down stair, then down one more and designate the up.

Rather than start a new thread every time I have a question, I've decided to try to keep my many queries to this one thread.  Any and all advice and help gratefully accepted.

1)  I take it that the chasm is gone from this version?

2) The wiki warns against building many-storied up/down stairwells, because dwarves fall down them.  Should I avoid them?  How do y'all recommend one design multi-level stairways?

3) I don't seem to be able to get my barrel stockpile to work.  I've specified for furniture - wood - barrels, bins, buckets.  But no matter how long I wait, even when several of my dwarves devoted to hauling items/furniture, my carpenter shop simply fills up with empty barrels.  Am I doing something wrong, or have I discovered a bug?

I'll be back with more questions presently.  It looks as if irrigation works very differently from the previous version I used to play, and I'm not sure I understand the explanation in the wiki.

No, it's still there, but no longer does every area contain everything.
You're embarking somewhere without one.

2) The wiki warns against building many-storied up/down stairwells, because dwarves fall down them.  Should I avoid them?  How do y'all recommend one design multi-level stairways?
I've never seen them fall down them...

You're not accepting any QUALITY levels.

Irrigation is fairly useless.

Regarding 2: Shame to hear it, since I finally figured out how to make up + down stairwells, and now it's too late.  Oh well: I'm sure my fortress won't survive too much longer anyway.

Regarding the answer to 3: Aha!  Will check that directly.  Thanks.

Regarding 4: Well, I thought I was going to need to irrigate, but discovered a huge underground source of sediment while digging towards the river.  So I can skip the irrigation for the time being at least.

Little advice:
When last I played this game, it was horizontal.  It seems as if being able to dig down levels has a profound influence on fortress architecture.  Do you build vertically instead of horizontally these days?  To me it seems like three decentralize floors of workrooms and two or three floors of living space built around a central stair shaft is absolutely the most effective design.

Is this the general consensus?
