1  Other Projects / DF Dwarf Mode / Re: The King? on: October 29, 2008, 09:59:07 am
I finally got my Queen.  She is a widow with two daughters, neither of whom came with her.  She brought along an Advisor, one peasant, and four Royal Guards.  She owns a Steel Mace, and a set of cloth and leather clothing.  Her Advisor is likewise a widow with two children, one son and one daughter.  Neither of these came along.  They both worship a lot of deities, and neither has any likes or dislikes.

So, all in all, my fortress's population only rose to 244 and nothing extreme has happened.  I'm trying to decide whether to attempt to complete my building project (a lump-a-mid), or start over now.  I honestly don't think losing is fun, but starting anew ~is~.  *grins*

I have wondered why one can't take the Narrow clothing, made of silk, and piece it into Dwarven clothing, or at least make silk bags and ropes from the pieces.

Well, when I said Build, I should have said Build-except-Build/Construction.  I think it's the same stuff that magma destroys.

I was very much amazed the first time a dragon came through and carefully destroyed every one of my stone floor grates which were supposed to keep out the riff-raff from my light channels over my indoor gardens.  It was then that I learned to make glass blocks.

Then I learned that stone blocks transmit light every bit as well as glass, in DF.   Cheesy

Isn't the fire breath of the dragon amazing?  I was astonished at how good it looked, in an ASCII game.

Dragons can break down doors and rip up floor grates.  I guess that means anything under the Build menu.

I think what Duke is saying is that putting your traps closer to the outside world than your dogs, will save on dogs.  Otherwise the dogs get used up fighting goblins who would otherwise succumb to traps.

I have ten rows of 3 traps on my trade road.  Before I rearranged things, I had two dogs tied just inside those traps.  Goblin archers killed them.  Now I have the Trade Depot further down the road, past a small courtyard.  Overlooking the courtyard is a watchtower with fortifications which are manned (dwarfed?) by marksdwarves during caravan visits.  The wall surrounding the courtyard has several sets of double doors into the rest of the settlement.  My sentry dogs are tied up just behind these doors.  Thus they can detect stealthed invaders while staying outside of bowshot range of the traps.  They are in pairs, and they have killed everything that they detected so far.

"You cannot designate crops mid-season" means that they are not avaliable for designation (red).
/quote"

Strictly speaking, you can't apply a change next year if you can't make it this year, but nevermind.  I got my answer.  Thank you.  Smiley

As I told you.
There's a short period when you can't plant seeds because the season is almost over.

You cannot designate crops mid-season; any changes you make for the current season will not apply until next year.

Sorry, I was responding to Zorgn, not to you.  You posted while I had the reply window open.  Thank you.

I do have a copy of that wiki page, btw.  It says nothing about all crops being red because it is too late in the season to change the selection for the next year.  It only says that the changes won't apply until next year.  Wink

As for the comment on red plots above, I believe that happens when your farmers can't find seeds.
/quote"

As for my red plots, I always have lots of seeds available.  By lots, I mean 100 - 200 for each type.  The red shows up for every single plant species, on every plot.  It often seems to happen near the end of winter.  I wonder if for some reason the growing seasons end in mid-winter and nothing is allowed to happen until spring.  There's not even crops standing in the fields to be harvested.

At any rate, I'm not short on seeds, so that's not it.  Smiley

If you brew Plump Helmet, you should get seeds back (spawn, in that case).  Make sure you have Cook set off for all the seeds, under Kitchen  in Status (z), as well as for the Plump Helmets themselves.  You should end up with more seeds than you know what to do with.

Fertilizing doesn't seem to work right, though.  I fertilized my plots in Spring, with them set to (z)Fallow starting in Winter (2 seasons set to fallow).  When the season changed to Summer, the fertility dropped from 5 to 0, and that's not right.  With no crop growing, the fertilizer should not be used up.

Why do plots go all red for all crops, sometimes?  I thought it might be lack of water, but I don't water them and they become useful again the next season.

Fertilizing only seems to work on aboveground plots.  Even though Seasonal toggles on for the underground plots, it still doesn't work.  They will fertilize the aboveground ones with (f), though.

I hit [c] and discovered that I now have two Dwarven cultures nearby.  I used to only have one.  The one with whom I have been trading, and to whom I sent the gifts, has a Queen.  The other one has a King.  I don't think the second one has ever sent a caravan to me.

I know I did not get a Dwarven caravan last autumn.  I suppose I might have had a siege just then, but it's not like my sieges should stop anyone.  In fact, I hate to admit this, but during my last siege I forgot I was under siege after I called all my Dwarves in.  I got to browsing the web and went back to find that most of my tethered war dogs had been killed by an enraged Human, who died just short of the burrow entrance.  Bad, bad me, to wander off in the middle of a siege and leave my poor kobold-sentry dogs to take the brunt of an attack that my archers were supposed to fend off.  Still, it wasn't much of a siege if seven war dogs could stop it.  Well, seven dogs and a pile of traps.  But that entrance wasn't the main entrance and only had half the traps.  And no archers.

Because I can get one?  Only apparently I can't, lol.

I have two nice royal bedrooms and two nice royal mausoleums, just waiting for them.

Is the some reason why the king would not come, if the three criteria on The Incoming King are satisfied?

You could always just use the select command and type in MECH to show all your mechanisms, or Cabi to show the cabinets..."

I'll take a look at that, next time I get a trader.  Thanks.  Smiley
