Regarding 2: Shame to hear it, since I finally figured out how to make up + down stairwells, and now it's too late.  Oh well: I'm sure my fortress won't survive too much longer anyway.

Regarding the answer to 3: Aha!  Will check that directly.  Thanks.

Regarding 4: Well, I thought I was going to need to irrigate, but discovered a huge underground source of sediment while digging towards the river.  So I can skip the irrigation for the time being at least.

Little advice:
When last I played this game, it was horizontal.  It seems as if being able to dig down levels has a profound influence on fortress architecture.  Do you build vertically instead of horizontally these days?  To me it seems like three decentralize floors of workrooms and two or three floors of living space built around a central stair shaft is absolutely the most effective design.

Is this the general consensus?

Rather than start a new thread every time I have a question, I've decided to try to keep my many queries to this one thread.  Any and all advice and help gratefully accepted.

1)  I take it that the chasm is gone from this version?

2) The wiki warns against building many-storied up/down stairwells, because dwarves fall down them.  Should I avoid them?  How do y'all recommend one design multi-level stairways?

3) I don't seem to be able to get my barrel stockpile to work.  I've specified for furniture - wood - barrels, bins, buckets.  But no matter how long I wait, even when several of my dwarves devoted to hauling items/furniture, my carpenter shop simply fills up with empty barrels.  Am I doing something wrong, or have I discovered a bug?

I'll be back with more questions presently.  It looks as if irrigation works very differently from the previous version I used to play, and I'm not sure I understand the explanation in the wiki.

Never mind.  I figured it out.

Sorry about being so bothersome with these idiotic questions.

I have no "Quit" option in my main menu.

I'm playing a tile variant called "May Green"?  There were a lot of specialized settings in the .ini file I had to change back.  There's no quit option, and when I want to exit, I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Another stupid question: how do I quit without abandoning my fortress?

How do I load a saved game?

Thanks, Refar!

Honestly don't know why I was having this problem before, but I've resolved it now.  Thanks for the advice and help, anyway.

Actually, I noticed that after moving downward a z level, designating the upward stairway, and then returning to the surface, my cursor was placed two squares to the left of the downward stairway.  This sounds like the probable cause of the problem, but how do I figure out the correct spot for the upward stairway?  And why doesn't a simple up/down stairway work?

On an unrelated note, if I hit z and check my stores, I note that all the items I possess now in mid-spring have a question mark beside them.  Why?

Cause I sure can't.

 Undecided

I can't get my miners to dig downward.  I've tried to follow the wiki instructions carefully, but for some reason they don't work.  Just be clear, here's what I've done:

1) Designated a single square as a "downward stairway" (d + j).

2) Moved one step down along the z axis.

3) Designated the square directly under as an "upward stairway" (d + u).

4) Waited.

Here's what happened:  My miner immediately dug the downward stairway.  Then he just hangs out.

I tried digging an up/down stairway as well, with the same result.

What am I missing?
