1  Other Projects / DF Dwarf Mode / Noble Ideas on: October 29, 2008, 05:55:05 pm
I strive to get the best out of every single dwarf that inhabits my fortresses. So I worry about the eventual nobility making unmeetable demands and then having a poor innocent dwarf get hammered to death for it. So I came up with an idea. Isolate the nobility. Give them their food and request items through a number of 'airlocks'. Lock the door to the food stock area when it needs to be refilled and then transfer some prepared meals to their stockpile. Make a similar one for their bedrooms.

This may not be a new idea, but I like it. If you see any flaws or have your own way of keeping your nobles out of your hair without outright murder, share. Heck even if it does involve outright murder, why not.

Well better get used to this kind of thing happening, because as of the next version it sounds like there will be all sorts of fun "surprises" like this one, with more venoms and diseases.

you cannot build a wall without another wall or ground below.
check: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Wall
thus - unfortunately - true (not entered through cellar) castles are impossible also. or, at least, i've never managed to build one.

No, I assure you, you can build a wall with nothing below it. Floors count as "support from an adjacent construction" So you can build a wall without a wall or ground below it.

Oh dropping it into the ocean would almost certainly destroy it. I think that was the point of the lever. Basically a self destruct switch.

This dwarf seems to have run out of luck. But for the future, is there any way to put out a flaming dwarf? Maybe set up some sort of emergency dwarf shower?

You can make one fairly easily. I used showers to cool magma into obsidian and to evenly distribute the water to make my tower-cap farm.

To create an emergency "sprinkler" system you could place small amounts of water in pools and in the pools somewhere have hatches attached to a lever. Some drainage hatches on the floor itself after the fire is out would be adviseable as well. This could be important as  dwarves dont pay any attention to fire. They will go to pick up a dead friend, even if they are on fire, thus setting themselves on fire.
I wouldn't put this sprinkler system on every floor, but just the one or two floors that are high risk for fires.

You could use pumps to empty out the water on some of the ocean and build while the water is at 1-2. It has been shown to be effective. You can see an example here -> http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-305-floatingpumpplatform.

Well if you're into over the top stuff you could dig into the sea. Sounds crazy impossible, but with some crazy dwarven engineering it can be done, apparently. A movie of it might be done is here-> http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-305-floatingpumpplatform

The only mod feature I would add is the combat text to be an on/off in fortress mode. I do so miss the epic combats.
