Is there a way to disable / stop the messages and pauses associated with discovering valuable materials while mining?

Just Dig It Out.

It's around here somewhere. Ask around. Someone knows a mirror.

It'll let you get rid of the pausing/un-designating for Water, Magma, or Both.

And you have to run it each time you run DF.

I'd like to add that removing those bothersome messages sounds very dangerous. Please post when you breach a magma pool or cave river so I may have a hearty laugh.

Just Dig It Out is described as only remove warnings related to water and magma - this is not what I want.  I want to remove the messages and pauses when discovering new minerals / gems / etc.

Yeah I don't really CARE when I discover microcline AGAIN or mica or whatever. Its a rock, its a funny color. I'll notice I have it next time I build something. Be quiet and dig.

I can just see it... Urist McDumbminer exclaims "Guys, we've hit Microcline!!" and the other miner looks at him "Urist, we've hit microcline at this level in every single hilltop. Its nothing special... and if you tell me again about the mica one level down, by armok I will mine your head in!"

I'm amazed that no one has built a mod or figured out a way to do this.   It has to be annoying to other people as well.
