Title: Toady Found!
Post by: jaybud4 on October 26, 2008, 12:25:01 pm
Does anybody by chance have some way to contact Toady and let him know about the temporary stuff here?
I'm sure he's spending a lot of his time looking for a new host, but some way for us to have contact with him in the meantime would be great.

Toady is here!  Find his post further down.

Yeah, if he signed up to this forum then he could talk to us about the problems and we could try to help. We just need some way of avoiding having any fake toadies sign up.

Keep in mind server admin gets access to both IP address and email address.
It'd be fairly simple to run a cross-check as proof.

Uh, yeah, I don't think any of that's correct.
The email is at Stanford, which he doesn't attend (anymore, at least)
The address is in Cali, while the cache of his information on Bay12 has Washington state...
EDIT3: Toadyone [at] bay12games.com ?  I don't think that will work, considering the domain is void...
EDIT4: Hmm..  Sent an email to the above..  No immediate failure, so I think it might work...

He was on the SA boards, here is a link to the page: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2917631&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=107

Unfortunately you need to pay money to sign up, but if there is anyone here with a SA account I am sure they would be willing to contact him.

I'll let him know that this is where our Berhamsted (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkhamstead)(i.e., where Du Gaule organized the Free French Forces from within Brittan.) is. Perhaps he'll stop by and fill us in.

Got a message back from Toady on his Gmail account fixing the email I sent to him (:P)
So, we're not reliant on SA after all.

Good. SA isn't something you want to be reliant on.

Yeah, they shut my site down with very little notice (that is, we had been discussing the problem cordially for a week after their first notice, then suddenly they were like SECOND NOTICE! and pulled the plug).  So, screw them.  That is, Verio.  In any case, I've got a new web hosting company, but they are taking their precious time.  They said they'd normally have things up within "one business day", which was Friday.  So I guess we're looking at Monday now.  I'm going to call them tomorrow.

So, Toady, was anything lost when the site went down? How recently had you backed it up?

I believe he stated the 21st was the most recent backup.
It could have been a LOT worse.

That's right, I've got backups of both the site and the forum database up to the 21st.  I still have my old account, but I can't access the database as it stands.  Once I have the new web space, I'm going to try to get my database information from the old provider so that there won't be any lost posts, but I'm unclear how that's going to work out.

They were just all kinds of mean, weren't they?

I'd think it'd be kind of against some kind of internet rule thing or whatever to suddenly pull the plug while you're talking about an issue. That's sort of shooting the liason in the head right there... No more caravans for you, mister web hosty place.

Were there any major changes made after the 21st, excluding the forum posts and whatnot? I mean, not that there's not some important stuff happening in the forums what with bug reports and feature discussions or what have you, but I'd be more worried about updates made between the 21st and now being gone... If there were any.

I dunno, I haven't been able to check the site in an age and a half. XD

Killing the liaison = siege.
Too bad we don't have an army.
Or the legal right to do it anyway.

I think we lost a bit of Sean's RTD :(

All I can recall was that the last turn had me being set on fire. Ouch.

hey, is it possible to situate the topics from the temp forum back over to the original one when it's back? i'm growing to like a lot of the topics here.

Just quote them in a new thread :3

Thanks to me using spreadsheets, we lost none of my RTD. :D And you're still on fire, Boksi. :)

Yeah. Sean saves his RTD regularly to avoid things like this. I always keep drafts of my rounds in a text file somewhere, so I have 95% of the most recent round saved.

ha, excuse me for being a giant newb, but what does RTD mean?

Title: Re: Toady Found!
Post by: Boksi on October 27, 2008, 04:57:56 pm
Roll To Dodge.

It's similar to a RPG. It uses a single six-sided die to determine everything. And I mean everything. Check out Sean's recent topic, it's the newest turn of his RTD :3

Hmm.. Bay12games.com just times out for me. Was there a name change or something?

No, the old link works for me too, now. Forums are still down though.

It's probably just DNS server lag stopping some people from connecting still. Should be gone in a day or so.

Weird, I have the same problem as R1ck.  What link are you using, MMad?

I can't wait to get back to the forums.

I'm waiting on my old host to give me access to the database so I can get an up-to-date copy of the forum information.  I have no idea how long that will take, but they've generally gotten back to me within a day or two.  Everything else should be up and running at the new site.

The site is up, that's AWESOME. Regardless of the state of the forums (stupid meany old web host) it's cool to be able to read the devs again.

I have access to my old databases now, and I've put up the forums again (same url as usual -- http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php ).  I have no idea if they work.  They seem to work, but when I pressed the "fix errors" button, it had me fix an error called "???".  I really have no idea what that means.  In any case, all the information exists in a few places now, so we can just keep trying if it isn't fine.  Unless it's subtlely corrupted and slowly dies over many months or something.

I'm getting "No input file specified."

Edit: I found out what was wrong! If any of you edited windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts when nobody could log onto the forum, then get rid of what you added then because it will mess you up now.

Because you were basically telling the computer what IP to connect to when you're telling it to connect to bay12games.com
Obviously with the new host the IP has changed, thus that breaks it.
